The Big (Skincare) Kahuna
My all or nothing skincare guide with every product I use and how and when: it's here. These are all brands I've mentioned in snippets before, but today you can find it all in one place: this big (skincare) kahuna of a blog post. I've broken 'morning' and 'night' routines up into 'light' or 'heavy duty.' It’s basically like a slightly boring choose your own adventure book. I decide between light and heavy duty depending on how my skin feels and on how much time I have. Trust yourself to know if you need 'light' or 'heavy duty' (or something in between), because I trust you. So, you should trust you too. Let's go:
If I'm in a rush (always el oh el...), I'll apply a very generous amount of Valjean Labs Replenish Gel on my face and neck. I let it soak in while I brush my teeth.
I apply EltaMD UV Daily Tinted Sunscreen as my 'foundation.' I put a dot on my forehead, each cheek, and my chin (4 dots total). If I have work or an event (yes, out to eat with my husband counts as an event), then I apply my makeup (concealer, blush, mascara) after my EltaMD sets.
If I've used a deep moisturizer or overnight mask the night before, I'll wash my face with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser to start with a fresh palette.
I dry my face with a different washcloth every day that I reserve specifically for my face only. Don't rub your face dry, pat. I can't stress how much that has helped my skin.
I apply Pearl Essence Radiance Perfecting Serum (one giant drop on my forehead and two mini drops on each cheek) and let it sit while I brush my teeth.
Next, I apply a generous amount of L'Oreal Revitalift Anti-Wrinkle + Firming Day Cream. It makes my skin so hydrated that it glows, so I'm careful to let it set for as long as I can.
I finish the morning off with EltaMD and some makeup if I have somewhere to be.
After work/before a workout, I take my face makeup off (EltaMD, L'Oreal Pro Glow Concealer) by washing my face with Cetaphil. I do not use makeup remover wipes for my face makeup. I do use Neutrogena makeup remover wipes for my mascara and eyeliner.
I apply Witch Hazel as a toner with a cotton pad or a piece of paper towel or several pieces of toilet paper artfully layered together. I dab all over my face to make sure my makeup is g-o-n-e.
If I haven't sweat and my makeup is already off, I'll skip another face washing and apply Pearl Essence Radiance Perfecting Serum (3 drops again). I brush my teeth while I wait for it to soak in.
I apply Olay overnight mask, which may not sound 'light,' but for my skin it actually is. The more I moisturize, the better my skin looks and feels. It's way lighter than other overnight masks I've tried and it's even lighter than L'Oreal Revitalift Anti-Wrinkle + Firming Night Cream.
Post-workout I'll wash my face with Cetaphil yet again (it really is as gentle as the reviews say).
I then dab my face with Ole Henriksen Dark Spot Toner with a cotton pad/paper towel/toilet paper tower.
After the toner has soaked in, I'll apply Pearl Essence and let it sit while I brush my teeth (Didn't we just do this...).
Lastly, I apply a heavy-handed amount of Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask (one dollop on my forehead, each cheek, my chin, and my neck). Ahhhh, it's bedtime.
I never workout in my makeup, I repeat never. Unless I have been completely blindsided by an impromptu hike or walk or something even remotely physical with a full face of makeup on by Satan himself.
Remove your face makeup with a cleanser, cleansing balm, cleansing jelly (gross), or anything but a makeup remover wipe. These wipes made my acne go absolutely bananas. Do not do this.
Let products set. Don't go all willy-nilly and glob moisturizer on your face only to immediately nuzzle your face into your pillow. Give each product a breather. Brush your teeth or fan your face or do a 30 second dance routine.
Use a designated towel (washcloth, paper towel, etc.) to dry your face. Do not dabble with other towels that you’re already using for your hands/body. This can spread bacteria/acne/makeup residue/whatnotness.
Always, always use toner. This has saved my skin from big bad acne. You can moisturize all you want, but make sure you tone the next morning. It gives you a fresh base to start with.
Be consistent. You're human. You're going to forget to wash your face or apply your moisturizer or pack your serum on a trip. Forgive yourself, but get back on that horse. Make all of these sweet sweet products a part of your routine.
May moisturized times and consistency be with you, ladies xx
