How Now, Personal Style?
Standing in the surf shop with streaks of red sunburn, I contemplated what buying a trucker hat would 'say about me.' My personal style could have best been described as, 'Catholic school uniform.' Because, that's what it was.
My main source of income was babysitting, making any purchase a 'big purchase.' I stared at the strange, mesh, navy and white hat for an eighth time.
I walked out of the beach shop in 2010, already knowing that my new, strangely tall baseball cap hybrid wouldn't get much use. But it was mine and I had chosen it and it wasn't plaid. Unlike my wicked sunburn, the hat would last.
My personal style as of late is, 'someone's dad on holiday.' I've been more about function over flair - finding myself styling actual drawstring, heather-grey, cinched-bottomed sweatpants. I've been relying on one or two statement pieces (i.e. see the trucker hat or imagine the pointed-toe leopard mules I wore with comfy pants last night) to pull together a look. My secret? Not actually thinking.
Personal style is ever-changing, evolving, morphing. Will I be dressing like this in a few months? Who knows? But, probably not. Maybe...
